Talk Title: From Players to Hosts: Building a Security Culture Through CTFs

Abstract

In this talk, Rune and Eirik will dive into the history of EPT and Equinor CTF. They will share the journey from their first CTF experiences to creating the EPT CTF-team, and eventually hosting Norway’s largest CTF.

We explore how the competitive spirit and educational structure of CTFs became a key part in building a high-performing security team. The talk will delve into the ways in which the team embraced CTF activities, fostering a culture of continuous learning, problem-solving, and teamwork.

Bios

Eirik Nordbø is the team lead for Vulnerability and Exposure Management in the Equinor Cyber Defense Center, with many years of hands-on experience in incident response and penetration testing. Eirik is an avid CTF enjoyer and has been active in the CTF community since 2016. He is one of the founders of both the Equinor CTF and EPT, Equinor’s own CTF team.

Rune Johansen is a cyber security professional with 13 years of experience, including 10 years dedicated to various cyber security roles. He began as a software developer before transitioning to cyber security, focusing on incident response and digital forensics for several years. Rune is now heading up the Equinor Cyber Defense Center Response team.
